Board Of Directors

Katisha Vertrees – Executive Chair

As a kidney transplant recipient, Katisha was diagnosed with lupus at 20 and also found to have stage 3 kidney disease. Since 2016, she has frequently been hospitalized and deeply understands the patient experience. She has worked as a vascular technologist at Sentara, which allows her to show compassion for others facing health challenges. Having dealt with two conditions that are not always visible but can be devastating, she aims to raise awareness and support those struggling, medically, mentally, and physically.

Taylor Vertrees – Vice Chair

Taylor met Katisha in 2017 and married her in 2022 after she was diagnosed with ESRD. He attended all her appointments and supported her in the medical system. As a firefighter in Virginia Beach, Taylor gained experience in EMS training and everyday medical emergencies, which led him to assume the role of caretaker in the Vertrees household. This experience inspired him to advocate and raise awareness for people in Tidewater.

Kenika Jackson-Green – Secretary

Kenika’s kidney health journey started in 2003. She was diagnosed with a rare kidney disease called IgA Nephropathy (IGAN).  Over time her kidney function decreased. In 2015 she was also diagnosed with a rare disease called Mixed Connective Tissue Disease (MCTD).  She understands the challenges of living with comorbidities.  As an In-Home Intensive Therapist and CBT Autism Therapist, she has spent her career advocating for individuals and families with various disabilities. She partnered with Kidneys for Tidewater to support a community dedicated to helping people with their kidney health journey.

Jessica Davenport – Treasurer

My journey into kidney disease advocacy began not in a classroom or clinic, but through the deep bond I share with my best friend, Katisha. We met in 2007—just two middle school girls playing soccer—never imagining the path life would take us on. When Katisha was diagnosed with Lupus in 2015, I had no idea how serious it was or how drastically her life would change. Over the years, I witnessed her strength as she endured repeated hospitalizations and, eventually, the harsh reality of dialysis. Feeling helpless but wanting to take action, I created the “Kidney 4 Katisha” Facebook page to raise awareness and help her find a living donor. While Katisha and her husband Taylor took the lead in sharing her story, I’m proud that the platform helped shine a light on her struggle and ultimately played a part in connecting her to a donor. Today, I serve on the board of Kidneys 4 Tidewater to continue that mission—supporting others in their search for living donors and offering hope to those navigating the challenges of kidney disease. I believe in the power of community, compassion, and shared stories to make a difference.
