A kidney from a living donor can last 15-20 years where as a deceased donors kidney will last 8-12 years. Living donors are preferred because the kidney is more likely to start functioning immediately (97% vs. 50-60% with a deceased donor). Donating a kidney doesn’t negatively affect life expectancy, some studies show they actually live longer than average.
